Tap water is chlorinated in South Korea in safe amounts, but may cause stomachaches if directly consumed. Bottled water or bringing along thermal flasks to boil water is strongly recommended.

Crime rate in South Korea is low, but it is still advisable to safeguard valuables as a precaution against pickpockets.

Due to political tension with North Korea, be sure to carry identification documents with you at all times and ensure next-of-kin contact information on your passport is up-to-date and accurate.

Possessing health and travel insurance is also highly encouraged.

Another mode of transport is by train: firstly, for travelers continuing to or from Japan, the special railway routes are available with a 30% discount on both KTX services and Japanese trains. The railway system in South Korea is centralised. The National operator Korail and high-velocity KTX express train connect various large cities around South Korea. Subways and taxis will also be available throughout the country.

When to go

The climate in Korea is temperate: in the winter, temperatures range from -7oC-1oC, hence be sure to prepare thermal wear and an outer winter coat if you're visiting Korea in December or January. If you are more comfortable with weather that is similar to Singapore's, visit Korea in the summer (22oC-30oC) where precipitation is also the heaviest. It can also be very humid in the summer.
